Who We Are
Penn First is a student organization at the University of Pennsylvania for first-generation college students and students from a low-income background. |
Our Goal
We aim to build a community for all FGLI students on campus by providing support through social events, professional development resources, and creating spaces for conversation. |
Dedicated to the University of Pennsylvania's FGLI Community
Welcome to Penn!
College can be both an exciting and overwhelming time for both you and your family. It can feel especially tough if you have financial angst or are the first in your family to attend college. But at the University of Pennsylvania, you won't necessarily feel the pressures of being FGLI for two reasons: 1. there are many students just like you. 2. there are resources designed to help you. |
What is FGLI?
FGLI (figly): First-Generation, Low-Income. Penn's Defintion: students who are the first in their families to go to college and/or come from low-income households. |
Are you first generation?
To us, being a first-generation student has a more expansive definition: "One or both of your parents have not received a college degree
"You are the first in your family to pursue higher education in the United States "You are the first in your family to pursue higher education at an elite institution "You are the first in your family to make efforts toward changing your socio-economic status "One or both of your parents started a college degree but did not complete it |
